Toward Neurally-Inspired Computational Models of Narrative∗

چکیده

In the spirit of the neuroscience theme of this year’s meeting, I will describe a set of cognitive and neurophysiological phenomena that are important for the processing of narrative text at the discourse level. Text processing depends on sequential structure in language and also in the events that language describes. Semantic representations of events capture perceptual and motor properties of described situations, leveraging previous lived experience. Although a large number of neural systems are involved in processing narrative text, a constrained subset of systems are selectively engaged by discourse-level processing. To bring these phenomena together, I will present a simple neurally-inspired computational model of visual event processing that may provide a helpful analogy for some features of language processing. 1998 ACM Subject Classification J.4 Psychology

Toward Narrative Schema-Based Goal Recognition Models for Interactive Narrative Environments

Computational models for goal recognition hold great promise for enhancing the capabilities of drama managers and director agents for interactive narratives. The problem of goal recognition, and its more general form, plan recognition, have been the subjects of extensive investigation in the AI community. However, relatively little effort has been undertaken to examine goal recognition in inter...

A Knowledge Representation that Models Memory in Narrative Comprehension

We present work toward computationally defining a model of narrative comprehension vis-à-vis memory of narrative events, via an automated planning knowledge representation, capable of being used in a narrative generation context. There has been much recent research on computationally analyzing and generating narratives (e.g. Mani 2012). Key to these efforts is the modeling of the mind as it mak...

Toward a Computational Model of Narrative

Narratives structure our understanding of the world and of ourselves. They exploit the shared cognitive structures of human motivations, goals, actions, events, and outcomes. We report on a computational model that is motivated by results in neural computation and captures fine-grained, context sensitive information about human goals, processes, actions, policies, and outcomes. We describe the ...

Requirements for Computational Models of Interactive Narrative

The aim of this paper is to revisit the fundamental requirements for bulding computational models for Interactive Narrative. We express the need for broader computational models of narrative and underline the fundamental difference between models for story generation and models for Interactive Narrative. Research directions are finally sketched to move towards dedicated computational models for...

Toward a Computational Model of Affective Responses to Stories for Augmenting Narrative Generation

Current approaches to story generation do not utilize models of human affect to create stories with dramatic arc, suspense, and surprise. This paper describes current and future work towards computational models of affective responses to stories for the purpose of augmenting computational story generators. I propose two cognitively plausible models of suspense and surprise responses to stories....
